Skin focus: Rosacea

Rosacea is something I see often in my clinic.

Rosacea is a common inflammatory skin condition that causes a flushed red face with visible blood vessels. Sometimes with puss-filled bumps and a burning/itching sensation.

Triggers can include:

Exposure to extreme weather and temperature changes

Cold weather

Hot sun

Alcohol

Spicy food

Strenuous exercise

Caffeine

Stress

Rosacea can be linked to gut health, research has shown links to various gut issues including IBS, SIBO, Celiac disease, and Helicobacter Pylori infection among others.

I personally have experience with Rosacea after a facial left my skin barrier compromised. I hadn’t had a history of skin issues prior and found it to be most upsetting and it affected my confidence. I had to work out what made my skin worse, both internally and externally.

People with Rosacea experience flare-ups and periods of remission. With the flare-ups they can experience burning and itching sensations as well as redness or flushing around the nose, cheeks, chin, and forehead and often leaving them feeling self-conscious and with low self-esteem.

It is important to address the root cause of the condition by avoiding personal triggers. Such as diet, lifestyle, and stress. Creating a food diary and noting anything that increases your symptoms can be helpful with this.

Looking at your digestive system and gut health is extremely important with Rosacea. There is something referred to as the gut-skin axis which is the relationship between the gut microbiome and skin health.

Rosacea as with most skin conditions is a reflection of what is going on with our health below the surface. It's the body’s way of letting you know, something isn't quite right within. It's important to address this, and get to the root cause of what is happening to be able to support the Rosacea.

Much love,

Katie xx
