Resetting post-holiday: How to keep your holiday inside-out glow alive
Koh Samui Thailand
Your breakaway was superb.
Now that the end has come, you feel a mixed bag of emotions. Perhaps you aren’t ready for reality just yet. Or you are eager to get back to it.
Here are a few of my post-holiday tips to set yourself up for success:
Focus on wholefoods and plenty of hydration
Mindfully transitioning back into a healthy lifestyle without restriction allows for a more relaxed approach. If you have overindulged, simply start to eat normally again for you. Launching a new “diet” can risk metabolic disruption. Focusing on eating a wholefood balanced plate is a good practice:
½ plate of a variety of colourful vegetables and/or fruit. Plants are rich in phytonutrients, vitamins, minerals, and fibre. Fibre is especially supportive for a post travel sluggish digestive system. Leafy green vegetables can support liver health and overindulgence.
¼ plate of good quality proteins such as organic meat, fish, eggs, quinoa, tofu, and beans. Protein helps to keep cravings at bay and balance blood sugars while you readjust to home life.
¼ plate of complex carbohydrates such as whole grains and starchy vegetables.
½ tbsp of healthy fats such as good quality olive oil, organic butter, ghee or coconut oil. Or avocado, nuts and seeds.
Meal plans
Meal plan and organise an online food delivery for when you arrive home, full of healthy ingredients to make meals with. A good option, especially if you are jet lagged, is to book a healthy meal delivery company.
Good sleep
Holidays can often disrupt normal sleep patterns, especially if travelling through time zones. Getting back into a regular sleep schedule and sleep hygiene is key. Some golden rules are to avoid eating 2-3 hours before bedtime to allow for proper digestion, avoid caffeine after 12 noon and no screens 1 hour before bed.
Daily movement
Move in a way that feels good to you; remember to nourish, not punish. Movement will help with your lymphatic system and help to get a sluggish digestive system moving.
It’s OK to feel down
When you have had a wonderful holiday, it is easy to have a sense of holiday blues as we get back to reality. I take time to reflect on my holiday experience on the journey home. I write all the things that I have learnt from the experience, what I am grateful for, and what made me feel good. Setting intentions for the coming months supports my post-holiday positive mindset.
If you feel the holiday blues, it is important to up your self care activities. Be kind to yourself while you readjust to home life.
Happy summer.
Much love,
Katie xx
